Roses are red, violets are blue,
People are dying, Nina might soon be, too . . .
For a while it seemed landscape designer Nina Quinn’s
life was one big bed of roses. Her garden makeover business, Taken By Surprise,
was blooming. Her pesky ex was finally out of the picture and a hunky new beau,
Bobby MacKenna, was in it. But then the weeds started taking over when Bobby accepted
a job in another state, nipping their blossoming relationship in the bud. However,
he’s back in town to appear with Nina as undercover contestants on “Hitched
or Ditched,” TV’s sleaziest reality romance show, since they'd promised
Bobby's lawyer cousin they’d help him dig up some dirt on the show’s
producer. Then an uncomfortable situation grows far worse when there’s a
death behind the scenes...and the only reality is murder.
Nina would much rather be installing an indoor garden at a
dysfunctional local nursing home than getting her hands dirty in this dangerous
business. But if she doesn’t uproot a cold-blooded off-camera killer, she
may be the one who's weeded out.

"Trouble in Bloom is an enjoyable fast-paced murder romance novel in which Heather Webber’s Nina Quinn heroine is very reminiscent of Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum and just as lovable. I really enjoyed this breezy, humorous whodunit filled with lots of quirky but endearing characters!"

DIGGING HER OWN GRAVE
Landscaper Nina Quinn makes her living from surprise garden
makeovers. It’s not her fault that someone duped her into digging up the
wrong yard. And she certainly can’t be blamed when her handiwork turns the
unsuspecting real owner apoplectic, and he drops dead from a heart attack…can
she? Nina’s got enough trouble already, with her divorce to faithless hubby
Kevin nearing completion and her unruly stepson up to his teenage neck in possibly
illegal mischief. Now she’s in danger of losing her business! But there’s
something screwy about this rather convenient “accidental” death of
a man whom apparently no one could stand--not even the “grieving”
widow who’s threatening to sue Nina’s overalls off. To save her livelihood--and
her skin--Nina’s going to have to dig deeper into the dirt than she ever
has before…and see what sort of slimy secret things crawl out.

2005 Agatha Nominee for Best Novel
Landscaping is Nina Quinn’s business, but trouble seems
to be her middle name. Saddled with a recently expelled, faithless local cop husband,
a teenaged terror of a stepson, and the yappiest, most unhousebreakable Chihuahua
in captivity, Nina needs a respite--and the backyard makeover she’s undertaking
for her sister Maria and Nate, Maria’s fiancé, may do the trick.
But, of course, Nate vanishes mysteriously, and Nina’s gardening magic inadvertently
turns up a corpse. And with a thief on the prowl who’s preying on the neighborhood
elderly, a suspicious Pandora’s Box of a package arriving on her doorstep,
and yet another body inconveniently turning up, Nina’s going to have to
dig into her community’s dirtiest little secrets to regain her peace and
sanity--if she can manage to stay alive long enough to enjoy it.

Nina Collette Ceceri Quinn’s business, Taken By
Surprise--a landscaping firm specializing in surprise garden makeovers--is
the only thing in her life that seems to be thriving. Her marriage to adulterous
police detective Kevin Quinn has wilted. Her anti-social stepson Riley is spreading
trouble around like pungent manure. Even her gardening tools are disappearing,
including a rather valuable set of hoes. Worst of all, the delightful old man
who first introduced her to the joys of horticulture is dead--and not
by natural causes. Something evil has taken root in Nina’s Ohio small town,
and the local police--including dearly unbeloved Kev--are baffled. But
it’s amazing what a resourceful gardener can dig up when she puts her mind
to it--though, by sticking her hands too deeply into this fetid, fertile soil,
Nina might well end up planted beneath her own petunias.

"Heather Webber is at
the top of her game, and instantly launched her way to the top of my "must
read" list. I can only hope she can write quickly enough to satisfy the hunger
she has created. With its shocking ending and candid views, A HOE LOT OF TROUBLE
is a surefire winner!"
|
"Ms. Webber has written
a book which is a lot of fun and a good mystery, and has given us a protagonist
who is plucky and believable, as she tries to solve the murders and her own personal
problems as well, both marital and business.
As an added bonus, we are told that each book
in this new series will have gardening tips included. All one could ask for in
a terrific new addition to the 'cozy' genre."
-- Mystery Morgue (read the whole review at http://breakthroughpromotions.com/hoelotreview.html) |
"Heather Webber’s
debut mystery is fascinating as the heroine copes with a divorce, a recalcitrant
stepson who is part of a school gang, a business that is losing valuable equipment,
and the death of a man who was her mentor. Nina copes with all these problems
admirably and investigates the two murders although it means putting herself in
danger. Readers will admire Nina and eagerly await the next mystery starring this
intrepid champion."
